What is the World Cup?
The World Cup is a national soccer(association football) competition between the World's greatest national teams. The event takes place over summer for about a month but can be moved later due to heat like this year. It is one of the world's most viewed competitions, with an average of over 3.5 billion viewers total. Every year it is hosted by a different country or in some cases countries and the country that hosts it is guaranteed a place in the tournament. Teams enter the World Cup through qualifier competitions between teams within that continent. These qualifiers are hosted from the end of the last world cup to the start of the next one. Each continent has a different number of teams sent to the competition.
Format
- Group Stage: The world cup begins with a group stage of 32 teams which are put into 8 groups of 4 teams. The groups are selected through a random draw of qualified teams. The teams in each group will play each other once with a total of 6 group stage matches in each group. Then after the matches for the group stage is played the top two teams of each group move onto the round of 16.
- Round of 16: The teams that advanced move on to a single elimination tournament. Where the teams play dependant on their group seeding with the Group A's first place team and Group B's second place team playing and Group B's first place and Group A's second place teams playing. This happens with all pairs of groups till all groups have been gone through. The teams who win their matches move onto the Quarterfinals.
- Quarterfinals: These teams play each other according to the bracket and the winners move onto the Semifinals.
- Semifinals: These teams play according to the bracket and the winners play in the finals. Meanwhile the losers play for third place.
- The Final: The two remaining teams battle it out for the trophy, the World Cup.

Awards
- The Golden Ball: Awarded to the best player of the tournament according to a media vote. A silver and bronze ball are given to second and third respectively.
- The Golden Boot: Awarded to the player with the most goals by the end of the tournament. A silver and bronze ball are also given to second and third top goal scorers.
- The Golden Glove Award: Awarded to the best goalkeeper during the World Cup according to the FIFA Technical Study Group.
- The Best Young Player Award: Awarded to the best player under the age of 21 during the World Cup.
- The FIFA Fair Play Trophy: Awarded to the team who has advanced to the second round and plays the most sportsmanlike according to the FIFA Fair Play Comittee.
- The Most Entertaining Team: Awarded to the most entertaining team of the tournament through public poll.
- The Goal of the Tournament: Awarded to the best goal scored in the tournament according to a public poll.
- The All-Star Team: A team compromised of the 11 best players of the tournament chosen by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
- The Man of the Match: Awarded to a player every game to display outsanding performance in a game, voted on through public poll.
